Surface Tension

I have been studying about liquid. Liquid is one of the state of matter and it has a thin skin at the surface called surface tension. Surface tension is the liquid particles that stick together and form a layer. Insects could float on top of water because of surface tension.

Trying to do an experiment if the water particles stick together. Syringe is the only material available, we could use medicine dropper. I made drops of water on a plastic sheet. Try to stick them together if it is working.

Finally! The water particles stick together!

Second experiment, paper clip floats on water
food coloring in a bowl of water (food coloring is to make the water visible), paper clip and tissue paper or paper towel

Put paper clip on top of tissue paper

Gently put on top of water

as the tissue paper gently pushed down, the paper clip float

We tried to drop the paper clip in water, but it sinks! Why is it? It should be floating! When we put paper clip on tissue paper, the paper clip floats. Tissue paper helps the paper clip to put on the water "very gently", so that it won't break the "surface tension."

Here is one more experiment
Plastic basin, glass of water, food coloring (to make the water visible), cardboard

Put the food coloring to the glass of water

Put the cardboard on top of the cup of water
and tern it upside down

It's awesome!

I tried it again in a bigger jar

WOAH! Awesome!  :)
